About Terry DeWitt

I'm a professionally trained executive coach dedicated to partnering with senior leaders to develop superior leadership and organizational performance.  We achieve this by leveraging an integrated approach to leadership; one that recognizes that external behaviors and results come from internal self-mastery and organizational culture; and one that focuses organizational energy toward the purpose of delivering extraordinary value to stakeholders (customers, owners, staff, suppliers, colleagues, community, environment, etc.).

To support my clients, I bring robust coaching credentials and decades of practical real-world leadership experience.  My expertise has been strategic as well as operational. I have led departments to develop marketing and strategic plans that build brands and drive performance.  And I have navigated complex organizations and marshaled forces to deliver effective operational execution.

I'm here to serve as your dedicated thought partner—equipped to work with you on any challenge with empathy, rigor, and practical experience.  My full background is presented below.

Background

bring life experience as a senior executive, father, athlete and patient to my work with clients.  I have a deep interest in human nature that has driven my academic studies, my career in marketing, my board activities, and my coaching practice.

I earned my BA at Harvard University in Sociology, magna cum laude with highest honors. I received a summa cum laude for my thesis on the "The Effects of Work Environment on Motivation in Organizations." For this thesis, I also received the Fulton Prize for the best thesis in Harvard's sociology department. And I was a John Harvard scholar.

I earned my MBA at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.

Prior to coaching, I served as Vice President of Hospital Marketing at Mass General Brigham, where I led integrated marketing for 10 hospitals, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass Eye & Ear, McLean Hospital, and Spaulding Rehabilitation – all teaching hospitals for Harvard Medical School.  In this role, I led a department which developed marketing strategies and executed plans in support of these organizations.

Before that, I led the Office of Communications at the MIT Sloan School of Management where I served as chief marketing and communications officer for the school. I’ve also held various leadership positions at Harvard Business School Publishing (Managing Director), Fidelity Investments, L.L. Bean, and H.J. Heinz.  Previously, I worked at Bank of Boston and State Street Capital in corporate finance.

I served as a trustee at Maine Audubon and at The Healing Garden, a center offering integrative therapies for women with cancer. And I led a national championship-winning high school rowing program in Harvard, MA.

For most of my life I've been an avid endurance athlete and outdoor enthusiast.  I rowed varsity heavyweight crew at Harvard, started a recreational rowing program at Dartmouth, rowed at the Head of the Charles Regatta for many years, and won medals at the Masters National Rowing Championship. In addition to rowing, I’ve loved many other endurance sports, including cross country skiing, biking, hiking and sea kayaking.

In 2021, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that completely changed my life, limiting my ability to do the endurance activities I enjoyed and to work professionally in the same way.  I've had to manage a major life transition and build a new life and sense of purpose based on my new reality.  While challenging, I found this period of growth extremely rewarding and this experience has led to my interest in helping others to lead with integrity and wholeness in work and life.

In addition to the Center for Integrated Leadership, I also have a life coaching practice, the Center for Life Transition, focused on helping people navigate major life transitions such as retirement, midlife, career change, relationship loss, and chronic illness & disability.

I’m a Board Certified Coach; ICF Certified Coach (ACC); a Certified Executive Coach - ICF Level 2, Certified Career Coach and Business Coach; a graduate of the Center for Executive Coaching; and a member of the International Coaching Federation.
